Park Attractions

The Bosque Alegre wildlife refuge of Costa Rica protects the primary and secondary tropical rainforests and wetlands surrounding three small crater lakes, Bosque Alegre, Hule, and Congo. An ecological committee currently produces medicinal plants for use in shampoos and herbal teas, which has the added benefit of cultivating and supporting the butterfly population and diversity in the area.

Driving Directions

Cariblanco, Grecia, Alajuela. From San Jose, take the highway toward Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, passing Varablanca until you reach the town of Cariblanco.  It is approximately 1-1/2 hours from San Jose, Costa Rica.

Park Facilities and Hours

The ecological committee has a camping area with bathing facilities, 2 private cabinas for rent, and a restaurant overlooking Laguna Hule. The shop sells medicinal plants, teas, organic shampoos and butterfly art. Contact Lidieth Madrigal (506) 476-0194. Costa Rica.
